History
TÜBİTAK Bursa Test and Analysis Laboratory (TÜBİTAK BUTAL) was initially established on November 1, 1972, in Bursa, Türkiye, under the name "Textile Education and Research Center-TEAM" by Sümerbank. Focusing on the textile sector, this center gained the status of an institution in 1983. The institution's title was changed to "Sümerbank Research Development and Training Institution-SAGEM" on November 7, 1985.
As part of Türkiye's privatization process, SAGEM was transferred to TÜBİTAK on January 19, 1996, according to the decision of the Prime Ministry Privatization High Council, and it continued its work within the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center Textile, Finishing, and Clothing Clean Technologies Institute from April 1996. On October 16, 1999, the institute's name was changed to "Textile Institute," and SAGEM was renamed as "Textile Research Laboratory-TEAL."
On February 24, 2001, TEAL became directly affiliated with the TÜBİTAK Presidency, marking a new era as "TÜBİTAK Bursa Test and Analysis Laboratory (BUTAL)." BUTAL operates under the administrative and financial supervision of TÜBİTAK in Bursa, a strong industrial city in Türkiye. However, it provides services not only to Bursa but also across the country and internationally.
