BEYOND5 (SOI Technologies) ECSEL Project
BEYOND5 aims to build a European supply chain on Radio Frequency SOI technology enabling new RF use cases for sensing, communications, 5G radio and more. This technology project aims to enable the production of highly innovative components in Europe, demonstrating their value chain at user level in six different areas and strengthening the design ecosystem in Europe.
The main goal of BEYOND5 is to develop the three main SOI silicon technologies (ST-RFSOI65, ST-FDSOI28, GF-FDSOI22) and demonstrate their application in selected areas. In order to highlight the benefits of SOI technologies, six different demonstrations with real application models close to operational radio systems are planned. These six demonstrations are structured around four main application areas: IoT, V2X, 5G and Sensors.
Within the scope of the project, TÜBİTAK BİLGEM will focus on components such as ADC, PLL, mixer, LNA, filters, digital predistortion and source modulator to identify and design the receiver path sub-blocks. These sub-blocks will be fabricated and verified using 65 nm RF-SOI technology.
BEYOND5 is an important step towards a major contribution to the development of RF technologies in Europe. By creating a European supply chain based on RFSOI, the project lays an important foundation for providing innovative solutions in the RF field and developing the wireless communication systems of the future.

The Bilirubin Measurement Device is a device that can test jaundice in newborn babies with optical measurement through the skin, has a completely unique software, hardware and optical architecture, is suitable for routine use, works fully automatically, can transfer results to patient records wirelessly, and provides rapid intervention without effort and pain to the baby, and is also the first bilirubin measurement device developed with domestic and national facilities in Turkey.
In the traditional method, jaundice in newborns is measured by drawing blood from the baby. In babies requiring follow-up, frequent blood draws can be laborious and painful. For this purpose, an interdisciplinary team formed at TÜBİTAK BİLGEM UEKAE Bioelectronic Systems Laboratory has developed a completely effortless bilirubin (jaundice) measurement device that can be measured by optical method.
Neonatal jaundice is visible when bilirubin, a yellow pigment, accumulates in the sabcutaneous region. The severity of neonatal jaundice is proportional to the concentration of bilirubin. As the concentration of bilirubin increases, the color of the skin becomes more yellowish. Reflectance spectroscopy can be used to quantify the degree of yellow coloration of the skin. In order to design the optical unit of the device, a mathematical and physical model of infant skin was created. In line with the model, the optical unit and the mechanical design suitable for the optical unit were made and the device production started.
In order to design the optical unit of the device, a mathematical and physical model of the baby skin was created. In line with this model, the optical unit and the mechanical design suitable for the optical unit were made and the device production started. The device is the first medical device developed by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM. The technology transfer agreement for the device was signed with AYMED Medikal AŞ. All necessary approvals (Ethics Committee, CE, etc.) for the mass production of the device have been obtained by the company and hospital tests have started. In the near future, the company will start mass production of the device and domestic sales will begin.
The features of the device are as follows:
- The software, hardware and optical architecture of the % 100 is unique.
- Suitable for routine use.
- It works completely automatically.
- It can wirelessly transfer results to patient records.
- It can test jaundice in newborn babies by optical measurement over the skin.
- Rapid intervention can be done effortlessly and without causing pain to the baby.
